Mothers-to-be may experience better pregnancy by selecting an appropriate mind-body practice, says a new review of the evidence.
Experts from Taiwan looked at data from studies into the latest advancements in mind-body therapies in the gynaecological research field and the benefits they may have on women during pregnancy. Physical, emotional and psychological aspects were all scrutinised, and here’s what they found:
Reflexology and acupressure offer natural pain relief for common discomforts;
Prenatal yoga enhances physical health, reduces discomfort and lowers stress and anxiety levels;
Meditation takes on stress and anxiety and nurtures emotional resilience;
Prenatal Pilates improves musculoskeletal health and prepares women for labour, emphasising controlled movements and breathing techniques;
Breathing techniques are helpful in managing pain during labour;
Tai Chi improves physical fitness, flexibility and mental wellbeing.
‘This brief review… demonstrates the role of mind-body practices in enhancing the pregnancy journey, emphasising their integration into daily routines to contribute to overall well-being,’ the study authors highlight in The Taiwanese Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. ‘By selecting the right practice or combination, expectant mothers can experience an overall better pregnancy.’
How can reflexology help in pregnancy?
Reflexology is based on the concept that there are reflex points in the feet and hands that related to each of the body’s organs. By gently stimulating these points, tension and stress is reduced. Blood supply to the affected organs is improved, and toxins eliminated more effectively. Overall, reflexology can help the body to achieve balance.
Whilst reflexology does not guarantee pregnancy or a straightforward labour, the positive effects it has on the body are now increasingly supported by scientific research. Studies are finding that reflexology has beneficial effects on various aspects of health, including stress reduction, pain management and improved circulation, contributing to overall wellbeing. Pregnancy can now be added to the list.
